Concrete protection: why it matters

Concrete is a strong and versatile material, but it is not immune to damage.
Exposure to chemicals, moisture, mechanical loads and extreme temperatures can cause corrosion, cracking, and reduced structural integrity. This can occur in environments such as piping systems, treatment plants, cooling towers, and storage or process tanks. With the right protection, the lifespan of concrete structures can be significantly extended, ensuring optimal long-term performance.

Concrete: durable, but not invincible

Despite its reputation for strength, concrete is vulnerable to deterioration.
In many cases, plastic liner sheets provide an effective and lasting solution.

Protection against chemical attack

In industrial environments, wastewater treatment plants and waste facilities, concrete is often exposed to aggressive chemicals, acids and alkalis. HDPE liners shield the concrete from these harmful substances.

Preventing water infiltration

In tunnels or water reservoirs, moisture can seep into the concrete and weaken the structure.
Polyethylene sheets form a waterproof barrier that protects against infiltration.

Reinforcement corrosion protection

When water and chemicals penetrate concrete, they can corrode the steel reinforcement inside.
HDPE liners block these substances and protect the reinforcement, extending the lifespan of the structure.

Erosion protection

In applications like dams or sluices, where concrete is exposed to flowing water, sand or abrasion, HDPE liners prevent wear and erosion.

The consequences of concrete erosion

Concrete erosion can lead to serious structural issues, such as:

Leaks and moisture damage

Damaged concrete may allow water to pass through, leading to leaks in buildings and installations.

Loss of strength

Erosion reduces the load-bearing capacity of concrete, increasing the risk of cracking or collapse.

Concrete protection by Benvitec

Benvitec offers an innovative and flexible process for protecting both new and existing concrete structures, regardless of shape. We use plastic liners with a unique anchoring system that ensures optimal bonding to the concrete.

This anchoring system resembles the sole of a giant football boot, with no fewer than 420 “studs” per square metre. These studs are formed during the extrusion process and must never be welded on afterwards.

The visible side of the liner is completely smooth, preventing buildup and biological growth.
This results in long-lasting protection that safeguards the integrity of the concrete structure.

The choice of plastic depends on the required chemical resistance.
The most commonly used material is polyethylene (PE), available in thicknesses ranging from 2 to 12 mm.
