Sprinkler systems are one of the most reliable fire protection methods. They detect fires early and extinguish them effectively in most cases.
How does a sprinkler system work?
A sprinkler system is a fixed pipe network with sprinkler heads installed near the ceiling or roof.
Each sprinkler has a thermal fuse made of glass or solder, marked with a colour code to indicate its activation temperature. When the temperature rises due to fire, the fuse bursts, releasing water.
The water hits a deflector plate that evenly distributes it over the area – right where heat and smoke collect. This helps extinguish the fire and cool the space.
A flow switch or alarm valve detects the water movement and triggers an alarm. This can be a mechanical bell or a signal to the fire alarm control panel (SprinklerMeldCentrale), which alerts people in the building, activates evacuation, and connects with a private alarm centre (PAC) and usually the regional fire brigade (RBAC).
Note: sprinklers operate per zone. Only those in the affected area are activated, limiting water damage.
Benefits of sprinkler systems
Early detection
Fires are detected quickly, reducing potential damage.
Effective suppression
Most fires are controlled automatically and efficiently.
Minimal water damage
Only sprinklers near the fire activate – no unnecessary flooding.
Lower insurance premiums
Many insurers offer discounts for buildings with certified systems.
