BioFilters

Biofilters are eco-friendly air purification systems that use microbiological processes to remove pollutants from airflows. They rely on living microorganisms, such as bacteria and fungi, to break down harmful substances and convert them into harmless compounds like water and carbon dioxide.

HOW DOES A BIOFILTER WORK?

In a biofilter, microorganisms are placed on a filter medium, such as compost, wood chips, or peat. The contaminated air passes through this medium, where microorganisms absorb and metabolize pollutants. This process triggers biochemical reactions that break down harmful substances.

Biofilters are widely used for removing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and odor-causing substances in various sectors:
✔ Industrial processes
✔ Wastewater treatment
✔ Composting facilities
✔ Bioethanol production

They are particularly effective for low to moderate pollutant concentrations and provide a sustainable solution for odor and emission control.

BENEFITS

  • Eco-friendly – Uses natural processes.
  • Low operational costs – Energy-efficient and cost-effective.
  • Versatile – Suitable for various organic pollutants.
  • Minimal waste production – Generates little to no residue.

In Detail

1. Filter medium

The core of the biofilter is the filter medium, usually made of organic materials like compost, bark, or wood chips. It provides an ideal surface for microorganism growth.

2. Microbial colonies

Bacteria and fungi colonize the filter medium, forming a biofilm where pollutants are broken down.

3. Airflow

Contaminated air flows through the filter medium, where organic compounds are absorbed and degraded.

4. Biodegradation

Microorganisms convert pollutants into water and carbon dioxide, ensuring effective air purification.

5. Clean air

The purified air, now free of most contaminants, exits the biofilter.
